Once upon a time, in a far away land known as Truth, there lived an angel named Julie. She was a beautiful little angel girl who appeared perfectly ordinary.
As she looked at her own ordinariness, she believed that she was only ordinary. Therefore one day she decided that she was not enough, as perfect angels indeed are not ordinary. Or so she thought.
One day she was walking (or rather floating, as angels often do) by the great river known as Drift. Within its waters there were many screaming souls. All of them were crying out, "Save me! Save me!" Alas, the perfect ordinary angel did not know what to do, for surely this called for perfection. Since Julie had only witnessed her ordinariness she did not realize all else that she contained.
As Julie watched in horror, the screaming souls were dragged down the belly of the Drift's tumbling waters. She noticed that farther down the shore there were other angels, perfect angels, that were sweeping in and saving the screaming souls. Julie cried. She wanted so much to be enough and to help and to love. However, she did not think that she knew how.
Just then something happened! The great waters of the Drift opened and exposed a soul that had been left behind. The branch of a dead tree, down on the bottom of the river, had caught this soul's leg. The tree had trapped the soul underneath the water. The soul was dying and the angel Julie knew it.
Thinking only of the soul and not remembering her own ordinariness, Julie flew down to the dying soul. "I'm here to help you!" Julie said. Her voice quivered. Her fears of the Drift closing its watery teeth, and thereby killing her too, began to overcome her.
"There is nothing you can do!" screamed the soul. "I am going to die in the Drift because my leg is caught. There is nothing anyone can do!"
"I'll help you!" Julie yelled. All the while the great Drift rumbled a great roar.
Julie left, and as fast as she could, she floated over to the other angels. "Come! Come!!!" she screamed. "There is a precious soul in the Drift that was overlooked! Its leg was caught under the branch of a tree on the bottom of the Drift so it could not be seen. Please…," she screamed, "please hurry! We must save its life!"
The herd of perfect angels and Julie flew. And in a breath they were there at the place where the great Drift's waters had parted. The perfect angels looked, and with great terror, saw the dying soul on the bottom of the Drift.
Julie said, "I brought you here because this calls for perfection and I am not enough. Please do something!"
The perfect angels panicked. They knew there was nothing they could do. The waters were already starting to close. They knew that they too would die in the Drift if they attempted to go down to help the dying soul.
Julie screamed, "Please! Do something!! This soul is almost dead!!! The waters are closing and the soul is drowning!!!"
The perfect angels froze. They could not speak. Their wings drooped to the ground as their tears streamed down their perfect cheeks. They did not know what to do.
Julie didn't know what to do either. But her love was so great that it filled her heart with great courage, courage that was stronger than all of her fears. Without hesitating, she flew down upon the waters and into the Drift.
Her wings became wet and she was no longer able to fly. She began to cry because she knew that she was no longer able to carry the dying soul to safety. The soul was also crying. Once more it screamed out, "There is nothing you can do!"
The Drift roared. Its watery teeth almost crashed down upon them.
"Stop!!!" Julie screamed. "This soul is important! It must not die! It has worth and it must live!"
Just then a most amazing thing happened. The Drift stood still. A golden light shone from within its waters, and from deep within them, a great voice was heard.
"Julie, my child," the voice said, "thank you for telling me. I did not know. I thought I felt something within my waters but I was not sure. I opened myself up so that the perfect angels could see, but no one came. I knew the other souls would be safe as they were floating on the top of my waters and the other angels were pulling them out."
The perfect angel's mouths dropped open in shock. They had not known that the Drift could speak. Julie cried out, "Please Drift… this soul's leg is caught under the branch of a tree and I am not strong enough to lift up the branch. I do not know what to do."
The great Drift laughed. "Silly little perfect ordinary angel," it spoke, "then tell the soul to crawl out from under the branch and set itself free!"
Julie did, and as she did, the soul wept great tears of joy for it too had not realized that indeed it was enough. The Drift was still calm as together, the soul and the angel Julie, swam out to the shore and onto its safety.
The soul embraced Julie and said, "Thank you, thank you. I did not know. I thought I was dying and no one knew. You were there and helped me just by being there. Had you not cared, I would now be dead. Had you been with the other perfect angels up the way, you would not have seen me left behind. Thank you, thank you!" the soul said.
Julie cried once more as warm and ordinary perfect tears fell down upon her cheeks. The other angels floated over to her as the soul joined the others of its kind and the Drift began again to move.
"Julie, dear one," the angels spoke, "there are many kinds of perfection. Of the best kind is the ordinary kind, for ordinary is often the only part of extraordinary that can be seen. You are not just an ordinary angel. Look closer. You are in fact an extraordinary angel. It is of the best kind of angel to be."
Julie knew then, that in reality all along, she had been enough. Her heart filled again with extraordinary love, the love of the best kind. In her own ordinary way, Julie came to know her own perfection. You see Angel Julie was indeed a hero on that day, an ordinary 'extraordinary hero', a hero of the best kind.
It is often through things, which seem ordinary that we come to know our own true perfection. And it is those who have the courage to look beyond what appears as only ordinary, who get to see the extraordinary gifts that are already there. Indeed, you too are enough.
